Service Tips for Fall

warningSilent Messengers and Silent Sentinels require little maintenance for continuous operation but if the little maintenance needed is neglected the result can be dead batteries.  Fall will soon be arriving, dirt build-up and leaves can prevent the panels from getting any sunlight.  Simple cleaning will ensure your unit will be working properly.
Also, even if your unit is out of service, if it’s being stored outdoors the charging system is on and working.  Remember to keep the batteries full, using distilled water.  Check and top of the battery water, and clean the solar panels once a month.

Checking Battery Water Level

battery levelWhen you look into the vent hole of each cell, you can see the battery fill indicator.  It is the plastic sleeve extending down into the battery.  When the water touches the bottom of the sleeve it will make a dimple in the surface of the water.  When the water touches the bottom of the indicator it is full.  Do not overfill the cell.  Make certain you fill every cell in every battery in the battery bank.
Take along one gallon of distilled water for every unit you are servicing.  If you have not checked the batteries on a monthly basis you may need more water.  Take along enough water to avoid extra trips.

Cleaning the Solar Panels
panelsSolarTech has engineered its products to make cleaning solar panels easy.  We recommend using a spray bottle and a window washer’s squeegee on a pole. Our smaller message boards and arrow boards can be titled for easy cleaning. On the full size Silent Messenger message board position the sign case into the travel position, then tilt the solar arrays. Check your manual for additional information about charging system maintenance and troubleshooting.  Manuals are available on the CD that came with the unit or from our website: solartechnology.com
