Battery Charging

SOLARTECH
equipment uses high-energy storage capacity battery banks. Recharging the battery banks in this type of equipment is not like recharging an automobile battery. You must use a battery charger specifically for 12-volt batteries. There are a few precautions that should be observed. Lead acid batteries can be dangerous, not only because they contain sulfuric acid, but also because there is an explosive mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gases around the battery compartment.

SOLARTECH offers an optional 30, 45, or 75 amp on board auxiliary battery charger. Each charger is equipped with an IQ Smart Controller, which monitors the charging status and prevents overcharging. Overcharging can ruin the entire battery bank, but with this system you don’t have to worry about a thing. Safety precautions you should take when recharging your batteries include, not smoking around batteries, wearing protective clothing, and using insulated tools. charger

Battery Charging Procedures

Installed chargers

Check fluid level in batteries and plug in the charger.

External chargers

  1. Turn the charger rate switch and timer to the off position before connecting the leads to the battery
  2. Make sure the charger posts are free of corrosion.
  3. Connect the charger leads to the battery terminals, red positive (+) lead to the positive terminal and negative (-) lead to the negative ground. Rock the charger lead clamps to make certain a good connection has been made.
  4. Set the electric timer to the desired charging time. (See chart for average time per type of charger.)
  5. Turn the charger on and slowly increase the charging rate until the desired ampere value is reached. Do not charge in the red zone.
  6. If smoke or vapors come from the battery, shut off the charger and reject the battery.

Never touch the charger leads when the charger is on or break a live circuit at the battery terminals. This could create a spark, which could ignite the explosive gases in the battery. Always turn the charger off before removing a charger lead from the battery.

If battery acid is spilled or splashed on any surface of the equipment, it should be neutralized with a baking soda and water solution and then rinsed with clean water. Clean up area immediately to prevent further accidents or injuries.
