Energy Management System

Solar Technology, Inc. recently introduced its proprietary and exclusive Energy Management System (EMS) for all SILENT MESSENGER Dynamic Message Sign models. For many years, we were never satisfied with the reliability, design, or operation of standard off the shelf components for the solar electric charging system, and the electrical and data connection systems.
As usual, we turned to our engineers for help! The answer - The Energy Management System (EMS), an integrated solid state system that performs the functions of a solar charge controller, a battery bank system monitor, and the main power control in a single easy to install and service unit. Additionally, it serves as the central tie point for all electrical and data systems.EMS

The EMS features the latest technology for solar electric charging systems including Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) charge regulation. Using PWM, the current from the solar array varies according to the battery’s condition and charging needs, resulting in improved charging efficiency, more rapid re-charging, and healthier batteries at full capacity. The overall result is greater energy transfer from the solar panels to the batteries which translates into longer run times.

The Energy Management System (EMS) also prevents permanent damage to the batteries that could result from excessive discharge. The main load terminals are fed through a low voltage disconnect, which completely unloads the batteries (turns the sign panel off) when battery voltage drops below 10.7 volts. The system automatically restarts when voltage recovers to 12.0 volts. Additionally, a temperature compensated charge control algorithm enables the EMS to sense battery temperature, and raise or lower the point at which current from the solar array is cut off. This protects the batteries from overcharging in the summer, and under charging in the winter.

The Energy Management System (EMS) is a battery systems monitor as well. It monitors the entire solar electric system to give you a digital display of solar array output voltage and current, and battery bank voltage and load current. This can be extremely helpful in troubleshooting and system diagnostics.
Mechanical attributes of the EMS include all marine grade wire and cabling , all high current rated tin plated locking type connectors and an electromagnetic circuit breaker for main power switch.
